Are you stuck in a job you hate? Do you feel overworked, underappreciated, and underpaid? Have you been neglecting the importance of having a balance between your work and your personal life? If that’s the case and you have been disappointed by your current level of success in your career, you are not alone. This is a reality many people face and one of the reasons for what’s being called The Great Resignation. Americans are quitting their jobs at record levels.
Coach and Consultant, Sandy Sanders says that some people feel stuck in a job with no potential for growth, especially for middle management professionals who experience almost double the rate of anxiety or depression as compared to other workers. As a result, they feel stuck in the middle of everything and lost in the shuffle. However, a silver lining exists in such situations; there is a way to get on track to happiness and fulfillment in one’s career.
Sanders, who is passionate about helping professional women experts Secure The B.A.G – Bodacious Ass GoalTM, is here to share the initial step to attain a fulfilling career, which is discovering your purpose in life. According to her, there are three simple ingredients to achieve success: purpose, plan, and preparation.
Discovering your purpose
Every major success begins with discovering your purpose in life. This is because finding one’s purpose creates the destination you want to arrive at. Unfortunately, most people have no idea what their true purpose is. Many individuals have given up on their dreams in exchange for the sake of living and chasing money, however, fulfillment does not merely rely on monetary gain. Successful people are happy, fulfilled, and living life with joy because they have discovered their purpose in life and do everything to achieve it.
“Women experts can achieve a fulfilling career by discovering their purpose,” Sanders said. She explained that purpose is found at the intersection of passion and profitability. How can women experts unlock their purpose? Sanders elaborates four steps to discover one’s purpose:
- Get clear on your interests and passions
Sanders suggests that you should make a list and write down everything that you are passionate about. Also, list the intrinsic value you can gain from them. Ask yourself, “How does this benefit me?” However, it is worth noting that there is a difference between purpose and passion. The former is something that you can get paid for while the latter is just a hobby.
- Figure out your values and how these values make you feel
Your values can be a myriad of things, such as family, work, and self-actualization among others. It is important to determine what factors shape your belief system and identify who you are at your core. You can also think about certain memories, life experiences, or general things you come across in life and try to see if there is a connection with the way you are living at present. Sanders advises you should list your values and how you feel about these values because knowing them are essential in discovering your purpose.
- Take an inventory of your innate strength, gifts, and talents
Identify your competencies and how these add value to your life. Know what you are good at and something that you do confidently. For Sanders, it is something that she can do as easily as breathing or sleeping. She noted that women experts might need to assess themselves through self-evaluations or getting feedback from others. There are various ways to do the inventory of your innate strength, gifts, and talents, but you must write it down.
- Determine the problems you can solve that someone is willing to pay for
In other words, find something you do efficiently and confidently that can result in profitability. Sanders stressed that it is crucial that women experts identify problem areas they can solve, which someone is willing to pay for.
The main goal after following the four steps to discover your purpose is to align the four lists and see where they overlap, which will serve as the representation of where your your passions intersect with profitability. This is where you can find your purpose. After writing down your interests, values, gifts, and something somebody is willing to pay you for, visualize how achieving that purpose would benefit you.
Final Thoughts
Having a clearly defined purpose is a prerequisite to obtaining a fulfilling career, wherein you get paid to do what you love, and add value while making a massive impact. Your purpose resides within you, but it is up to you to discover, unlock, and strive for it. Discovering your purpose can bring happiness, fulfillment, financial reward, peace, and quality of life.
Remember, your purpose creates the destination or your goal, your plan is the roadmap or the navigation towards your goal, and preparation is your right to enter the door of opportunity when it opens.
